The university was incorporated by an Act of 1947 and began functioning in temporary buildings in Guwahati. The university's first Vice-Chancellor was Prof Krishna Kanta Handique, a Sanskrit scholar. In 1959, the university departments moved to the newly constructed buildings of the present University Campus at Jalukbari.
