The uprising took place 25 years before the more famous Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, but is largely forgotten in Indian history. On January 28, 1894, unarmed peasants in Patharughat, Assam, protested against a 70–100% land tax increase by the British. When the British refused to hear grievances, police charged the crowd with lathis and then opened fire. Official records say 15 peasants died and 37 were injured, but unofficial sources say 140 died.
